Bugging Out- 2025 Victorian Landcare Grant
Insects and bugs play a crucial role in our ecosystems. They pollinate flowering plants that allow fruit to grow, they provide food for other wildlife, they filter water, they ensure we have genetically diverse flora species, they maintain balanced ecosystems, they are used in pharmaceuticals, they keep our soils aerated, they decompose organic matter, and they make up a whopping 95% of all biodiversity in the animal kingdom.

The Bugging Out Project grant was awarded to the Yarrowee Leigh Catchment Group in 2025. Our goal is to share knowledge with our community in order to increase awareness about insects, their importance in our ecosystems, with hope that this knowledge can slow the rate of insect decline. We hope to share best practice methodology to support insect populations and bring back the wonder and awe for the creepy crawlies in our gardens.

Come and explore the insect and bug world with us.

YLCG are hosting a series of free community workshops all about the wonderful insect world. Keep an eye out on our social media pages for upcoming workshops, and register via the booking link within each event post.

Guest speakers will share their knowledge with participants, which will be further supported by the inclusion of engaging hands-on activities such as creating your own bee-safe, bee hotel, or by helping to trap insects  in the Woowookarung Regional Park- contributing to citizen science.

In 2019, ABC Australia posted this video (link below) which documented the story of a Queensland farmer (Frank) who observed biodiversity decline on his farm, and decided to restore his farm back to health by exercising regenerative farming practices, and by minimising harmful chemical use. This farmer eliminated insecticides, nematicides, miticides and fertilisers. He reduced fungicide and herbicide use, and remained patient. The results will astonish you!  https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/programs/landline/2019-05-18/red-tips:-the-story-behind-the-bananas-with-the/11126862
