Citizen Science Nocturnal Insect Survey with Parks Victoria

Discover the word of nocturnal insects in the Woowookarung Regional Park (Place of Plenty) and contribute to citizen science help monitor habitat health. Insect diversity is a great indicator of habitat health and are crucial primary consumers in the food web. Guest numbers are limited, bookings are essential.

Details:

Sunday 15th March

7:20pm: Walk to nocturnal insect survey location
7:30pm: Insect survey methodology briefing & equipment set up.
8:30pm: Insect observations, iNaturalist demonstration & practice
9:30pm: Pack up site – leaving 1 or 2 x overnight UV trap & light
9:45pm: Citizen scientists & staff support to depart site

Monday 16th March

8:00am: Meet onsite at the scenic lookout.

Welcome and safety briefing

8:15am: Sort and live count of insects.

Recording of species on data sheets.

Taking photos where necessary.

9:30am: Pack up gear.

10:30am: Depart site.

 

Constraints that may result in rescheduling:

-rain

-windy conditions

-cold temperatures

 

Prior to arrival:

Please download iNaturalist app on your device and create your own account. Please be logged in ready for your surveys.

*Participants can come along to one or both days, whatever suits them best.

Catering:

Tea/coffee/hot chocolate and light snacks provided for supper.

 

 

Accessibility:

  • Able bodies due to uneven ground and low light conditions.
  • This is a family friendly event. Children are the responsibility of their attending adult.

Essential Items:

  • Keep cup for cuppas
  • Drinking Water
  • A fully charged phone and or power bank
  • Insect repellent (natural where possible)
  • Warm clothes
  • Head lamps
